The DRE licensing and renewal process


Following your enrollment in our DRE approved Real Estate courses and successful completion by passing our exams, you must then apply to the DRE to renew your license, or to eliminate conditions requiring education.

For information on processing your DRE renewal application and using our certificates of completion, click on the following licensing activity which best describes your situation.

General Information:

You may renew your license by mail or online with the DRE.

The Department of Real Estate (DRE) has or will mail you renewal forms approximately 90 days prior to your license expiration date. If you are renewing by mail and did not receive your renewal forms, you can download the forms from the DRE's website at http://www.dre.ca.gov.

You are responsible for notifying the DRE that you have successfully completed your continuing education credits as part of the renewal process.

You will need to print your Certificates of Completion after passing your online exams. You will need the information provided on the Certificates to complete your renewal forms for the DRE.

Payment of renewal fees to the DRE can be made by check (when renewing by mail) or credit card. Credit card payments on mailed renewal applications must be accompanied by DRE form RE 909. The DRE accepts Visa, Mastercard, American Express or debit cards with the Visa or Mastercard logo. The renewal fees for brokers and sales agents are as follows:

Broker Renewal

Brokers may renew their license by mail or online at the DRE's website. You will need to print out your Certificates of Completion to complete your renewal paperwork or to renew online. If you are unable to print the Certificates out, please contact our office at 800.794.0494. You are responsible for notifying the DRE that you have completed your continuing education requirements.

Renewing by mail Renewing online

The following DRE forms must be completed:

» RE 208
» RE 251
» RE 205

Additional documentation:

Proof of legal presence in the United States, such as a birth certificate, if not sent in with a previous renewal. For a complete list of acceptable documents which establish US citizenship, please visit http://www.dre.ca.gov/proof.htm.

Applicable fee:

Fees may be paid with a check or credit card. Payments made by credit card must be accompanied by DRE form RE 909. The DRE accepts Visa, Mastercard, American Express and debit cards with the Visa or Mastercard logo.

On-time renewal: $300

Late renewal: $450

Mail your completed DRE forms, any additional documentation necessary to renew and the applicable fee to:

Sales Agent Renewal

Agents may renew their license by mail or online at the DRE's website. You will need to print out your Certificates of Completion to complete your renewal paperwork or to renew online. Sales Agent — Removal of 18-month conditional education requirements

After completing two 18-month conditional courses, you must mail in the original Certificates of Completion to the DRE, along with DRE form RE 221. Mail the completed RE 221 and the original Certificates of Completion you have printed from our website to:

You need to notify the DRE that you have completed your final exams. Please allow the DRE at least six weeks for processing. Failure to complete and mail in proof of completion will result in the automatic suspension of your conditional license. The suspension will continue until the DRE has received your original Certificates and the completed DRE form RE 221. For more information, please visit the DRE website.

Application for Broker exam and license
To apply to take the state broker licensing exam, you must mail to the DRE the following:

» RE 400B - Broker Examination Application
» RE 226 or RE 227 - Employment Verification or Equivalent Experience Verification
» Original Certificates of Completion, or proof of completion, such as college transcripts
» Applicable fee

You are to notify the DRE that you have completed your final exams. More information on applying to take the state broker exam and fees can be found at the DRE website.

   

 

Application for Sales Agent exam and license

To apply to take the state sales agent licensing examination, you must mail to the DRE the following:

» RE 435 - Application for examination and license, completed and signed.

» Original certificate of Completion for Real Estate Principles course.

» Original Certificate of Completion for Real Estate Practices.

» Original Certificate of Completion for optional third course.

» RE 205 - Citizenship or alien status completed and signed with proof of Residency.

» RE 237 - Fingerprint operator service

» Fees payable to the Department of Real Estate by cashier's check, check, or money order; or paid by Credit Card using DRE Form RE 909:
