Obtaining your Broker License

After Completing Your Licensing Courses

Broker State Exam applications are only accepted by mail; the BRE does not currently accept online applications for the Broker State Exam. It is your responsibility to submit your Certificates of Completion for all your licensing courses to the BRE, as the BRE does not accept Certificates of Completion directly from education providers. After you pass your state exam

Congratulations! Once you've passed the state exam, you apply for your broker license. The first step is to complete your fingerprinting requirement.

Live Scan Fingerprinting

Print three copies of the RE 237, and fill out Part 2 on all three forms. Find a Live Scan service provider in your area. Take the filled out RE 237, and have your fingerprints taken. The Live Scan provider will send a copy of RE 237 to the Department of Justice. You keep one copy for your records. The third copy goes to the BRE (see below).

What to Send to the BRE - License Application

  • RE 200 - Broker License Application, completed and signed. The mailing address is on the form.
    • Note: this form is not available online. It is sent by the BRE after you pass the state exam.
  • RE 205 - Citizenship or Alien Status, completed and signed with proof of legal presence
  • RE 237 - Fingerprint Operator Service
  • (If paying with check) A cashier's check, check or money order for $300 payable to the Bureau of Real Estate.*
  • (If paying with credit card) RE 909 - Credit Card Payment Form
  • * Original license or examination applicants who reside in California will pay a $49 fingerprint processing fee directly to the live scan fingerprint service provider. Original license applicants who reside out of state should submit the $49 fingerprint processing fee to the CalBRE with their application and license fee.

Questions: 200 Multiple Choice
Time Limit: 5 hours; 2 hours and 30 minutes in the morning, and 2 hours and 30 minutes in the afternoon
Passing Score: 75%
