  Qualifying for a California Real Estate Sales Agent License


Minimum Requirements:

To qualify for the sales agent exam and license, you must:
  • Qualify for and pass the written state examination;
  • Be 18 years of age or older;
  • Provide proof of legal presence in the United States; click here for the full regulation;
  • Be honest and truthful, without conviction of a crime which would deny a license;
  • No real estate experience required;
  • Complete the following DRE-approved statutory licensing courses:
    1. Real Estate Principles;
    2. Real Estate Practice; and
    3. One of the following courses -

    • Legal Aspects of Real Estate
    • Real Estate Finance
    • Real Estate Appraisal
    • Property Management
    • Escrows

An education exception applies to members of a state bar or individuals who are graduates of a law school recognized by the California State Bar.

Application for state exam and license:

To apply to take the state sales agent licensing examination, you must mail to the DRE the following:

» RE 435 - Application for examination and license, completed and signed.
» Original Certificate of Completion for Real Estate Principles course.
» Original Certificate of Completion for Real Estate Practices.
» Original Certificate of Completion for optional third course.
» RE 205 - Citizenship or alien status completed and signed with proof of residency.
» RE 237 - Fingerprint operator service
» License fee:

Combined exam and license fee $305
Paid by Cashier's check, check or money order made payable to Department of Real Estate, or paid by Credit Card using DRE Form RE 909.
